Week 5 Preview: Expansion Team Battle

Bring on the LakeShow.

NetsGC returns to regular-season action in the NBA 2K League this week after spending a weekend in Las Vegas for THE TURN Tournament. There, NetsGC couldn’t get past Celtics Crossover Gaming in the first round of the Tournament, but the team did make and find some fans along the way.

But now it’s back to the regular season, where the team looks to snap a four-game losing streak. NetsGC has a prime opportunity to do so: they face fellow expansion team Lakers Gaming, which sits just 1-4 after a slow start to the season. The two teams will face off in the Friday nightcap on May 17, 2019, at 10 p.m. EST.

Lakers Gaming features Mitchell “Mootyy” Franklin, the fourth overall pick in the expansion draft, and rookie Kevin “Kev” Alvarado, the team’s top entry draft pick (second round), who hails from NetsGC’s backyard in New York. One of the most experienced teams in the NBA 2K League, Lakers Gaming features five players who competed in the league last season.

This matchup offers both teams a chance to rebound from early TURN exits. In Las Vegas, Lakers Gaming fell in the play-in round, losing 61-50 to Knicks Gaming. The two teams will see a duel of second-round picks who contribute in very different fashions. For Lakers Gaming, sharpshooter Kev is averaging over 14 points per game on over 40% shooting from beyond the arc.

NetsGC’s second-round pick has contributed in a variety of ways. Aziz “Shuttles” Salem made his debut in the regular season and immediately started stuffing the stat sheet. While he hasn’t led the team in scoring, Shuttles has posted averages of 5.7 rebounds, 3.2 assists, and 2.7 steals per game, all at power forward or center. Shuttles has made an impact all over the court, and his staunch defense will go a long way toward helping NetsGC contain Kev.

Shuttles, and the team as a whole, is ready for the LakeShow.
